Nash's Acre Opened

Redditch District Scouts’ Conservation Area Officially Opened on Saturday 10th September 2016

Redditch’s MP and the Scouting County Commissioner for Hereford and Worcester helped to officially open Nash’s Acre, a Scouting conservation and activity area in Astwood Bank on Saturday (10 September 2016). Picture 1

County Commissioner Derek Barnes cut the ribbon on the field, to the rear of Astwood Bank Scout and Guide headquarters in Manor House Lane, while Karen Lumley helped plant a tree to mark the event.

Scouts from the Redditch District also got involved in the festivities by taking part in activities including pond dipping, insect watching and rope demonstration skills, while the older Scouts cooked burgers on the site’s oil drum barbecue fires.

The whole project is the brainchild of Redditch District Scout Chairman, Peter Nash, who organised the purchase of the strip of land  from Redditch Borough Council and Severn Trent Water. It is used by Scouts and Guides within Redditch so their members can take part in outdoor activities and take in the local wildlife. It contains some ten varieties of wildflower and six varieties of grasses and boasts facilities such as a wildlife pond, bug and bee hides and a bug hotel as well as a shelter and a composting toilet. There is also room for pitching tents on the site.

Peter said: “This project has been some time in the making, but it has all been so worthwhile. It was wonderful that our Member of Parliament and Scouting County Commissioner could spare the time to come down to make this a really special day.

“I hope that Scouts for generations to come will be able to spend time here and make lasting memories for themselves.” Picture 2
